| Fairground art, Gustave Bayol (Avignon 1859 - Angers 1931) An exceptional wood sculpted and old polychrome carousel horse with glass eyes. Gustave Bayol started his career as a sculptor in Angers and started making carousel subjects at the request of a fairground helper. Realistic and expressive domestic and farm animals make up the bulk of his workshop's repertoire. An identical carousel horse of Bayol can be found in the Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) in Marseille. French work circa 1900. |
